Posted in Travel information on 07.12.11

The Hungarian capital is a great place to visit even during the winter months and has a lot to offer to those tourists, who have chosen the coldest days of the year to come to Budapest and enjoy themselves. Among the first things to consider, when planning a trip here, is to find a good Budapest apartment with central location and many facilities to make you feel comfortable. Then the planning of the rest is easy, just take in mind the tips given here.

Matthias Church (Mátyás-templom), Buda's Castle District, Budapest, Hungary

Like all other big European capitals, the city of Budapest provides an impressive choice of events, various programs, the beautiful Christmas market, etc. At that time of the year, the most important cultural and historic sites can be explored on foot, even if the weather is cold. This includes the marvelous Castle District in Buda, the Royal Palace Museums, and so on. If you are wondering which sites to see and which not, a good option is to check the World Heritage Sites of the city. In case the weather is not good for walking, you can always use the extensive public transport system of the city that features three metro lines as well. Those who are looking for some romance though, can go on a cruise on the Danube in a nice and warm ship, wherefrom they can see the most important sites that are placed along the two riverbanks, including the Gellert Hill and the Hungarian Parliament, as well as the Chain Bridge. There are also night river cruises as well.

The city of Budapest is a great place for dining out, wine tasting, going on concerts and nightclubbing. The city is especially beautiful during the Christmas season when all the streets and shop windows are decorated with festive lights and everything is so beautiful and magical. There is also a joyful Christmas Market, which is organized on Vorosmarty Square and is among the most popular Christmas fairs in this part of Europe. At the Budapest Christmas Market one can buy lovely gifts from the numerous wooden stalls, can enjoy some of the Hungarian pastries and get a hot cup of mulled wine. This however is not the only Christmas market in the town of Budapest, since there is also a market at the Liszt Ferenc Square that also has a great festive atmosphere.

Children will be really impressed by the Fairy Tale City of Christmas, which is organized in front of the Parliament Building. This is a great place for spending time with the family. Especially charming is the huge spruce tree, which is decorated with festive lighting and colorful toys, as well as the Santa Claus House and the Christmas train selling typical traditional Hungarian drinks and food. Another good option would be to go for ice skating on the City Park Lake, which happens to be one of the largest outdoor skating rinks in Europe and it is open until the end of February. As for the New Year’s Eve, there are plenty of celebrations going on in Budapest, with fireworks, etc.

For your next holiday you should consider going to Poland where you can rent a Warsaw apartment or an apartment in Krakow.
